About Subaru Traviq
The Subaru Traviq was a compact seven-seat MPV sold in Japan from 2001 to 2005. It joined Subaru’s range during a period of strong demand for practical multi-purpose vehicles, giving the brand an alternative to conventional estate cars and larger minivans.
Created through the alliance between Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, and General Motors, the Traviq was based on the first-generation Opel Zafira. It was developed in Germany, assembled in Thailand and distributed through Subaru dealers in Japan. Subaru specified its own suspension tuning and selected equipment, but the model remained unusual within the range because it used front-wheel drive and an inline four-cylinder engine rather than Subaru’s characteristic boxer engine and all-wheel-drive system.
Only one generation was offered. Early versions used a 2.2-litre petrol engine with a four-speed automatic transmission, while a more affordable 1.8-litre version arrived later. Trim packages included L, S, C, SL and A, ranging from straightforward family-oriented specifications to sportier or more comprehensively equipped variants.
The Traviq is mainly known for combining compact exterior dimensions with three-row seating. Its flexible seven-seat layout allowed the rear seats to fold into the floor without removal, creating a useful cargo area. Within Subaru’s line-up, it served as a short-lived, road-focused compact people carrier with European origins and practical cabin packaging.
