About Subaru SVX
The Subaru SVX is a two-door grand touring coupe introduced in 1991 as the successor to the Subaru XT/Alcyone. Known as the Alcyone SVX in Japan, it represented an unusual move into the premium performance market for a brand then associated mainly with practical, four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Produced in a single generation until 1996, with sales continuing in some markets into 1997, the SVX was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its most distinctive feature is the aircraft-inspired glass canopy, including small opening sections within the large side windows. The design combined a low, rounded profile with a four-seat cabin intended for long-distance comfort rather than uncompromising sports-car agility.
All versions used a 3.3-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. Most were equipped with all-wheel drive, although front-wheel-drive variants were offered in North America during part of the production run. Trim names differed by region, including L, LS and LSi in North America and Version E, Version L and S4 in Japan.
As one of Subaru’s most ambitious and expensive models of its era, the SVX served as a technological and design flagship. It remains notable for its rare flat-six coupe layout, distinctive glazing and combination of grand touring character with Subaru drivetrain engineering.
