About Subaru Sambar
The Subaru Sambar is a Japanese kei-class commercial vehicle introduced in 1961. Developed from Subaru 360 engineering, it became one of the brand’s longest-running nameplates, offered chiefly as a compact cab-over pickup truck or van. It occupies a practical role in Subaru’s Japanese range, serving small businesses, farms, delivery operators and trades that need useful load space within a very small footprint.
For its first six generations, through early 2012, the Sambar was designed and built by Subaru. These models became known for space-efficient rear-engine packaging, four-wheel independent suspension and the availability of four-wheel drive. The range developed to include standard and panel vans, high-roof bodies, passenger-oriented Dias versions and, in some periods, supercharged engines. Equipment and mechanical details vary considerably by generation.
Subaru ended in-house kei vehicle production in 2012. Since then, the Sambar has continued in Japan as a Daihatsu-supplied model related to the Hijet. The modern range centres on the Sambar Truck and Sambar Van, with two- and four-wheel-drive models, manual or CVT transmissions depending on grade, and Dias as a better-equipped van derivative. Within Subaru’s lineup, the Sambar is a specialist light commercial offering valued mainly for compact dimensions, efficient cargo space, manoeuvrability and adaptable configurations.
