About Subaru Rex
The Subaru Rex name first appeared in Japan in July 1972 as the successor to the R-2. It originally identified a kei-class car designed for economical, space-efficient transport. Three generations were produced through 1992, when the Rex was replaced by the Vivio. The range included passenger and commercial versions, with compact hatchback and van-style bodies.
Across its original production run, the Rex evolved from a rear-engined small car into a front-engined, front-wheel-drive model. Four-wheel-drive versions were also offered, giving the Rex a broader role than a basic urban runabout. Engine sizes changed with Japanese kei-car regulations, while later versions included naturally aspirated and performance-oriented variants. The model was known mainly for its small exterior dimensions, practical cabin and low running costs.
Subaru revived the Rex name in 2022 for a Japan-market compact SUV supplied by Daihatsu. This version is unrelated in design and engineering to the earlier kei cars. It entered the range as Subaru’s smallest SUV, positioned as an accessible choice for urban driving and everyday family use. The modern line has included front-wheel-drive petrol and hybrid models, along with a turbocharged four-wheel-drive version. Its notable qualities include easy manoeuvrability, a raised driving position, useful rear-seat space and a flexible cargo area.
