About Subaru R2

The Subaru R2 is a five-door kei hatchback developed mainly for Japan and sold from December 2003 to 2010. Positioned as Subaru’s main mini passenger car, it combined kei-class dimensions with a rounded, flowing body rather than the boxy shape common in the segment. Its name revived the R-2 designation first used by Subaru in 1969.

The R2 had one generation, with a notable exterior update in 2005 that revised the grille, bumpers and rear lamps. All models used a 658 cc inline-four petrol engine, an unusual layout in a class largely dominated by three-cylinder units. Depending on the grade, engines included SOHC and DOHC naturally aspirated versions, plus a supercharged unit for S and typeS models. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were available, paired with a five-speed manual or i-CVT. Some sportier versions had a CVT with a seven-step manual mode.

The range included basic i, F and F+ grades, the DOHC R, and the more performance-focused S or typeS. Special variations such as Custom, Refi, Utility Package, Favorite Edition and Smart Selection emphasised styling, comfort or practicality. The R2 is known for its distinctive one-motion profile, compact urban footprint, broad colour selection and nimble handling. Within Subaru’s lineup, it offered a design-led alternative to conventional kei cars while retaining the brand’s interest in all-wheel drive and distinctive engineering.
