About Subaru R1
The Subaru R1 is a compact three-door kei car produced in Japan from 2005 to 2010. Developed mainly for personal urban transport, it was positioned as a more individual and style-focused alternative to conventional space-efficient kei hatchbacks. The R1 was closely related to the larger Subaru R2 but used a shorter body and wheelbase.
Subaru offered the R1 in a single generation with a 2+2 cabin. It was designed primarily around the front occupants, while the small rear seats could also be folded to increase luggage capacity. Its rounded “one-motion” profile, pronounced wheel arches and distinctive grille gave it a recognisable appearance within Subaru’s small-car range.
All regular versions used a 658 cc inline four-cylinder petrol engine with a continuously variable transmission. The entry-level i had a SOHC engine, the R used a naturally aspirated DOHC unit, and the higher-performance S added a supercharger. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations were available, depending on grade and model year. Special editions included versions with leather and Alcantara trim and the later Premium Black Limited.
The R1 is known for combining kei-class dimensions with relatively sophisticated styling, independent suspension and an unusually refined specification for such a small car. It occupied a niche below Subaru’s mainstream models, emphasising compact size, efficient packaging and distinctive design rather than maximum passenger space.
