About Subaru Pleo

The Subaru Pleo is a Japanese-market kei car introduced in 1998 as the successor to the Vivio. Subaru positioned it as a compact wagon, combining the dimensions and operating economy of a kei car with a relatively tall, practical cabin. The first generation was developed and manufactured by Subaru and remained in production until 2009.

Early Pleos were offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and a choice of naturally aspirated, mild-pressure supercharged and higher-performance supercharged engines. Depending on specification, transmissions included manual gearboxes and Subaru’s i-CVT. The range covered basic passenger models, the commercial Pleo Van and sportier versions such as the RS. Distinctive variations included the retro-styled Nesta and the more individual Nicot.

A second generation arrived in 2010 as an OEM-supplied version of the Daihatsu Mira. It continued the Pleo’s role as an affordable, easy-to-use small car and was sold in standard, Custom and Van forms, with two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations available. Production continued until 2018. Within Subaru’s domestic range, the Pleo was known primarily for manoeuvrability, efficient use of space, low running costs and everyday practicality rather than the larger, performance-focused or crossover qualities associated with many Subaru models.
