About Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback is a five-seat midsize crossover combining the long roof and road manners of a passenger car with the raised ride height and utility of an SUV. It began as a rugged version of the Legacy wagon and entered the US market in 1995, becoming an early example of the modern crossover format.
Across seven generations, the Outback has moved from its station-wagon roots towards a more SUV-like design while retaining a two-row cabin and useful cargo area. The seventh generation arrived for the 2026 model year with a more upright body. Production has taken place in Japan and, for many years, in Indiana, reflecting its importance in North America.
Most versions use Subaru’s horizontally opposed boxer engines and all-wheel drive. Depending on the year and market, the range has included four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, turbocharged XT models, luxury-oriented trims and the more off-road-focused Wilderness. An Outback sedan was also offered in some earlier model years.
Within Subaru’s range, the Outback is positioned as a flagship two-row crossover and an alternative to conventional midsize SUVs. It is known for all-weather traction, generous ground clearance, long-distance comfort, flexible luggage space and a strong emphasis on driver-assistance and safety technology.
