About Subaru Leone
The Subaru Leone was a compact passenger-car range produced from 1971 to 1994. It followed the Subaru 1000 and became one of the brand’s main international models before the Legacy and Impreza reshaped Subaru’s passenger-car lineup. In many export markets, it was better known by designations such as DL, GL, L-Series and Loyale.
Built across three generations, the Leone was offered in a wide variety of forms, including saloons, coupés, hatchbacks, estates and commercial van versions. Specifications varied by year and market, from basic front-wheel-drive cars to four-wheel-drive and turbocharged models. Horizontally opposed petrol engines were a defining mechanical feature.
The Leone is particularly known for bringing four-wheel drive to a conventional, relatively affordable passenger vehicle. The Leone 4WD Estate Van introduced in Japan in September 1972 helped establish Subaru’s lasting association with all-weather traction. Later versions offered features such as selectable four-wheel drive, dual-range transmissions and, on certain variants, automatic transmission or turbocharging.
Within Subaru’s historical lineup, the Leone combined compact family-car dimensions with unusually broad body and drivetrain choices. Its practical estates, boxer-engine layout and strong suitability for snowy, rural and mountainous conditions played an important role in shaping the qualities later associated with the Subaru brand.
