About Subaru Justy
The Subaru Justy is a small car nameplate introduced in Japan in 1984. The original Subaru-developed model was a compact three- or five-door hatchback positioned below the brand’s larger passenger cars. It became known for offering four-wheel drive in a class where the feature was uncommon. In 1987, an electro-continuously variable transmission, or ECVT, joined the range as an early production application of CVT technology.
The Justy has covered several distinct generations and market-specific vehicles. After the first generation, European versions were produced through partnerships. A Suzuki-based hatchback arrived in the mid-1990s with permanent all-wheel drive, followed in 2003 by the Suzuki-built G3X Justy. This taller crossover-style version offered petrol engines with all-wheel drive, while a diesel variant used front-wheel drive.
A Daihatsu-supplied generation introduced in Europe in 2007 returned the Justy to a conventional city-car format. It used a 1.0-litre engine and front-wheel drive, emphasising manoeuvrability, cabin space and economy rather than the all-wheel-drive character of earlier models.
The name was later revived in Japan for a tall, five-door compact people carrier supplied by Daihatsu. Across its varied forms, the Justy has generally served as an accessible entry point to Subaru ownership, valued mainly for compact dimensions, practical packaging and, on many earlier versions, useful all-weather traction.
