About Subaru Domingo
The Subaru Domingo is a compact cab-over microvan introduced in Japan in 1983 and produced in two generations until the late 1990s. Developed from the Subaru Sambar, it used a lengthened body and larger engines to provide passenger-car capacity in a vehicle with a very small road footprint. Depending on the market, it was also sold as the Subaru Sumo, Libero, E10, E12, Columbuss, Combi, Estratto, Vanille, E-Wagon or Wagon.
Its tall, narrow body accommodated up to seven occupants across three rows, making the Domingo an early small multi-purpose vehicle. Rear-mounted 1.0- and 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engines were offered, with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive depending on version and market. Most examples had a manual transmission, while an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission was available on selected later models.
The second generation arrived in 1994 with revised Sambar-based styling, a longer structure and improved frontal protection. Passenger, utility and equipment variations were offered, although specifications differed considerably by country.
Within Subaru’s range, the Domingo sat above the kei-class Sambar while remaining smaller than conventional vans and MPVs. It is chiefly known for its unusually spacious and flexible cabin, compact dimensions, rear-engine layout and availability of four-wheel drive.
