About Subaru Dex
The Subaru Dex is a compact five-door tall wagon introduced in Japan in November 2008. Its box-shaped body and high roof were designed to provide generous passenger and luggage space within dimensions suited to narrow urban streets. It was primarily positioned as a practical city car for buyers wanting more room and flexibility than a conventional small hatchback.
The Dex was supplied to Subaru by Daihatsu and produced at Daihatsu’s Ikeda plant. It shared its basic design and engineering with the Daihatsu Coo and second-generation Toyota bB, while receiving Subaru-specific exterior details and model branding. This arrangement helped Subaru broaden its Japanese compact-car range without developing an entirely separate vehicle.
Only one generation was offered. The Subaru range used a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Buyers could choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the principal grades named 1.3i, 1.3i-L and 1.3i-S. Equipment and styling details varied by grade.
The Dex is best known for efficient packaging rather than sporting performance. It seats five and combines upright seating with sliding, reclining and folding rear seats. Its short length, good cabin access and relatively tight turning circle support everyday urban use. Within Subaru’s lineup, it served as a distinctive, space-focused compact model rather than one of the brand’s traditional boxer-engined vehicles.
