About Subaru BRZ
The Subaru BRZ is a compact 2+2 sports coupe introduced in 2012. Jointly developed with Toyota and closely related to the Toyota 86 and GR86, it is produced at Subaru’s Gunma Main Plant in Japan. Unlike the all-wheel-drive vehicles that define much of Subaru’s range, the BRZ uses a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
The first generation established its core formula: a naturally aspirated Subaru boxer engine, low seating position, modest weight and six-speed manual or automatic transmission options. The second generation arrived in 2021 for the 2022 model year, retaining the same concept while replacing the 2.0-litre engine with a more powerful 2.4-litre unit.
Depending on the market and model year, the range has included regular trims, limited editions and the tS performance version. The tS adds features such as STI-tuned suspension and upgraded Brembo brakes rather than substantially different engine performance.
Within Subaru’s lineup, the BRZ serves as a focused and relatively accessible sports car rather than a practical mainstream model. It is known for balanced handling, direct steering, a low centre of gravity and strong driver involvement. Small rear seats and limited luggage space reduce versatility but reflect its specialist role.
