About Subaru BRAT

The Subaru BRAT was a compact two-door coupé utility that combined passenger-car construction with an open cargo bed. Introduced for the 1978 model year, it was developed from the Subaru Leone platform and aimed mainly at export markets, particularly North America. The BRAT was not officially sold in Japan.

Two generations were produced. Early models used a 1.6-litre flat-four engine, while later versions generally received a 1.8-litre unit. Part-time four-wheel drive was central to the range, with some models offering a dual-range system for improved low-speed traction. Depending on year and market, versions included DL and GL trims, manual or automatic transmissions, removable roof panels and a short-lived turbocharged engine option.

In North America, the BRAT became especially recognisable for its rear-facing cargo-bed seats, fitted to early examples. Sales there ended after the 1987 model year, although production for markets including Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe continued until 1994. It was also marketed under names such as Brumby and MV Pickup.

Within Subaru’s lineup, the BRAT served as an unconventional alternative to both compact pickups and Leone-based passenger cars. It is best known for its light, car-derived design, practical load bed, distinctive flat-four layout and four-wheel-drive capability.
