About smart fortwo
The smart fortwo is a two-seat city car created around compact dimensions, easy parking and efficient urban travel. Production began in 1998 at Hambach, France, with the model initially sold as the smart city-coupé. It later adopted the fortwo name and became the defining vehicle in smart’s range, positioned below the larger forfour and aimed mainly at drivers who valued manoeuvrability over passenger and luggage capacity.
Three main generations were produced: the 450, 451 and 453. All retained a short, upright body and rear-wheel-drive layout, with the engine or electric motor mounted at the rear. The third generation, introduced in 2014 and developed with Renault, was wider than its predecessors while remaining exceptionally short. Body styles included the enclosed coupé and open-top cabrio, alongside performance-oriented BRABUS models and various special editions.
Early versions used petrol or diesel engines, depending on the market, while electric variants gradually became more important. From 2018, the battery-powered model was marketed as the smart EQ fortwo, and the range later became fully electric. Production ended in March 2024.
The fortwo is best known for its small footprint, tight turning ability, two-person layout, distinctive Tridion safety cell and replaceable exterior panels. These qualities made it particularly suited to crowded cities and established it as smart’s signature model for more than two decades.
