About Saturn S-Series
The Saturn S-Series was a compact, front-wheel-drive car produced from 1990 to 2002, covering the 1991–2002 model years. It was Saturn’s first vehicle line and remained the brand’s core small-car offering throughout its production run. Designed and built in the United States, it competed with affordable compact models from American and Japanese manufacturers.
Three main body styles were offered. The SL was a four-door sedan, the SC was a coupe, and the SW was a station wagon. Most versions used a Saturn-built 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine, with single-overhead-cam engines in economy-focused models and more powerful twin-cam engines in higher trims. Names ending in “1” generally identified single-cam variants, while “2” denoted twin-cam models. Later SC coupes were notable for a small rear-hinged access door on the driver’s side.
The S-Series is best known for its steel space-frame construction and dent- and corrosion-resistant polymer exterior side panels. Its light weight, practical dimensions and relatively simple mechanical layout helped establish its reputation as economical everyday transport. Across three broad generations, styling, interiors and equipment evolved, but the basic formula remained consistent. The S-Series was eventually replaced in Saturn’s compact-car range by the ION.
