About Saturn ASTRA
The Saturn ASTRA is a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback sold for the 2008 and 2009 model years. It replaced the Ion as Saturn’s entry-level passenger car and was positioned below the AURA saloon. Rather than being developed specifically for Saturn, it was a lightly adapted Opel Astra H, built in Antwerp, Belgium, and imported to North America. This made it part of Saturn’s late-2000s shift towards vehicles with closer links to GM’s European operations.
Two body styles were available: a practical five-door hatchback and a sportier three-door. The five-door came in XE and better-equipped XR trim, while the three-door was offered only as an XR. All versions used a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. The range was relatively simple, without the wider selection of engines and body styles offered on the European Opel model.
The ASTRA is known for its compact dimensions, useful hatchback layout and European-influenced road manners. Its cabin design, controls and firm suspension tuning differed from earlier Saturn small cars, giving it a distinct character within the brand’s range. Its short North American sales run also makes it one of the less common Saturn models.
