About Saab 99
The Saab 99 was a front-wheel-drive Swedish family car introduced for the 1969 model year and produced until 1984. Larger and more sophisticated than the Saab 96, it moved the brand into the medium-size family and compact executive segments. Production took place mainly in Sweden, with additional assembly in Finland and, for a period, Belgium.
The range included two- and four-door saloons, followed by three- and five-door Combi Coupé versions. This distinctive hatchback format combined a sloping roofline with a large rear opening and useful luggage capacity. Trim and performance variants included the L, GL, fuel-injected EMS, more luxurious GLE and the 99 Turbo. Engines progressed from early 1.7- and 1.85-litre units to Saab-developed 2.0-litre four-cylinder designs, with manual and automatic transmissions offered in different markets.
The 99 is known for strong front-wheel-drive traction, good visibility, practical packaging and an emphasis on occupant protection. Features introduced during its life included heated front seats, impact-absorbing bumpers and side-impact door beams. The 99 Turbo, launched for the 1978 model year, became especially significant as an early turbocharged performance car based on a practical family model. The later Saab 900 developed the same basic concept, while the 99 remained in production as the simpler model below it.
