About Saab 9000
The Saab 9000 was the Swedish brand’s large executive car, produced from 1984 to 1998. Positioned above the Saab 900, it served as Saab’s flagship and competed with premium European family and business cars. It was eventually succeeded by the Saab 9-5.
Developed through the Type Four programme with Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, the 9000 shared some structural elements with related Italian models. However, Saab gave it distinct body engineering, suspension tuning, powertrains and interior design. Italdesign contributed to the original styling.
The first version was a spacious five-door hatchback. The four-door 9000 CD saloon followed in 1988, while the restyled 9000 CS hatchback arrived in the early 1990s. Trim and equipment designations included CC, CD, CS, CSE and CDE, depending on year and market. The Aero was the best-known performance version.
Most examples use 2.0- or 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, with naturally aspirated, light-pressure turbo and full-pressure turbo configurations offered. A 3.0-litre V6 was also available in later years.
The 9000 is especially known for its roomy cabin, large luggage capacity, supportive seating and strong long-distance ability. Turbocharged models added flexible performance, while the driver-focused controls, practical hatchback layout and emphasis on occupant safety reflected Saab’s established design priorities.
