About Saab 900

The Saab 900 was a front-engine, front-wheel-drive mid-size car produced from 1978 to 1998. Developed from the Saab 99, it became one of the Swedish brand’s defining models and later sat below the larger 9000 in the range. It combined family-car practicality with the distinctive engineering and premium positioning associated with Saab.

The original model, now commonly called the Classic 900, was offered as two- and four-door saloons, three- and five-door hatchbacks, and a convertible. Naturally aspirated versions formed the mainstream range, while Turbo and later 16-valve Turbo models established its performance identity. The convertible, launched during the 1980s, became one of the most recognisable variations.

A second-generation 900 arrived for the 1994 model year and continued through 1998, with three-door and five-door hatchbacks and a convertible. Depending on market and trim, engines included naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder units, plus a V6. This generation retained familiar Saab styling cues but adopted a newer platform and more rounded bodywork. Known for its unusual profile, practical packaging, turbo performance and safety-focused design, the 900 linked the earlier 99 with the later Saab 9-3.
