About Saab 90

The Saab 90 is a two-door saloon produced from 1984 to 1987. It succeeded the Saab 99 as the brand’s basic European model and was positioned below the larger, more expensive Saab 900. Production took place at the Saab-Valmet factory in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

The model combined established components from two Saab ranges. Its front structure, cabin and mechanical layout were derived from the 99, while the rear body section was adapted from the 900 saloon. This approach gave Saab a relatively straightforward way to continue offering a traditional entry-level car as the 99 left production.

All Saab 90s used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Depending on model year and market, buyers could choose a four- or five-speed manual gearbox. Variations were limited mainly to transmission, trim, equipment, colours and minor annual updates; there were no factory turbocharged, automatic or alternative body-style versions.

Sold mainly in selected northern and western European markets, the 90 had a much smaller production run than the 900. It is known for its simple specification, practical saloon boot, distinctive two-door shape and close mechanical relationship to earlier Saab designs. Within the company’s 1980s range, it served as a conservative bridge between the discontinued 99 and Saab’s newer models.
