About Saab 9-7X

The Saab 9-7X is a five-seat, mid-size premium SUV sold for the 2005–2009 model years. It was Saab’s first SUV and was developed during General Motors ownership to give the brand an entry in the North American luxury SUV market. Unlike Saab’s mainly car-based models, it used a truck-derived, body-on-frame platform with standard automatic all-wheel drive.

Built in Moraine, Ohio, the 9-7X shared GM’s GMT360 architecture with several American SUVs. Saab differentiated it through unique exterior styling, a cockpit-inspired cabin, centre-console ignition and a Saab-tuned sport chassis. Rear air suspension, a folding second row and generous cargo capacity added to its practicality.

Early versions were named Linear and Arc, with 4.2-litre inline-six and 5.3-litre V8 petrol engines respectively. Later models were identified mainly as 4.2i and 5.3i. The performance-focused Aero joined the range for 2008, using a 6.0-litre V8 producing 390 hp along with specific chassis tuning.

Within Saab’s range, the 9-7X served as the largest and most utility-focused vehicle. It is best known for combining established GM SUV engineering with recognisable Saab design details, road-oriented handling and unusually strong V8 performance, particularly in Aero form.
