About Saab 9-5

The Saab 9-5 was the Swedish manufacturer’s large executive car, positioned above the smaller 9-3. Introduced in 1997 as the successor to the Saab 9000, it competed with premium European saloons and estates while retaining Saab’s distinctive approach to design, comfort and safety. Production was centred in Trollhättan, Sweden.

The long-running first generation was sold as a four-door saloon and a five-door estate, also known as the SportCombi in some markets. Most versions used front-wheel drive and turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines, although diesel and V6 options were offered in certain regions. Trim and performance variations included Linear, Arc, Vector, Griffin and the sportier Aero, depending on model year and market.

A substantially redesigned second generation entered production in 2010. It introduced a larger body, updated technology and available all-wheel drive, but its production run was cut short by Saab’s financial difficulties. A matching SportCombi was presented but did not reach normal series production.

The 9-5 is best known for its strong turbocharged performance, supportive seating, spacious interior and practical estate configuration. Its understated styling, driver-focused cabin and unconventional Saab details helped distinguish it from more mainstream executive cars.
