About Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit
The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit is a full-size four-door luxury saloon produced at Crewe, England, from 1980 to 1997. It replaced the Silver Shadow II and served as the marque’s main standard-wheelbase saloon through much of the 1980s and 1990s. Designed by Fritz Feller, its body combined traditional Rolls-Royce styling cues with a more contemporary profile.
Power came from Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-litre V8 and an automatic transmission. Specifications varied by year and market, with fuel injection replacing carburettors and a four-speed automatic arriving on later cars. Hydraulic self-levelling suspension, light power-assisted controls and extensive sound insulation contributed to its smooth, quiet road manners.
The model evolved through the original Silver Spirit, Silver Spirit II, Silver Spirit III and the final New Silver Spirit. These updates introduced changes to suspension control, engine management, safety equipment, exterior details and cabin fittings without altering the car’s basic identity.
The Silver Spirit is known for its imposing proportions, restrained performance and hand-finished interior, commonly featuring leather upholstery, wood veneer and deep carpeting. Positioned at the highest end of the luxury-saloon market, it combined rear-seat comfort with the ability to be owner-driven. It remains a notable example of Rolls-Royce’s traditional Crewe-era approach to luxury motoring.
