About Rivian R2
The Rivian R2 is a five-seat, midsize electric SUV introduced for the 2026 model year. Smaller and more accessible than the three-row R1S, it brings Rivian’s adventure-focused design and technology to a broader part of the electric SUV market. Its upright profile, short overhangs and practical cabin maintain the brand’s distinctive character in a more city-friendly footprint.
R2 production began in 2026 at Rivian’s expanded factory in Normal, Illinois, with customer deliveries starting during the second quarter. The model shares key in-house technologies with the R1 range, including Rivian-developed propulsion, vehicle electronics and software designed to support over-the-air updates. It also uses the North American Charging Standard connector.
The initial R2 Performance uses dual-motor all-wheel drive and adds semi-active suspension for stronger on-road and off-road capability. The R2 Premium, also with dual-motor all-wheel drive, is scheduled to follow in late 2026. A lower-priced R2 Standard is planned for 2027, led by a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration, with longer-range and all-wheel-drive options. Notable qualities include 9.6 inches of ground clearance, generous storage, a flexible rear seat and a balance of everyday usability, electric performance and trail capability.
