About Porsche Boxster

The Porsche Boxster is a two-seat, mid-engine roadster introduced in 1996 after the debut of its concept version in 1993. Its name combines “boxer”, referring to its horizontally opposed engine, with “roadster”. Positioned below the 911, it became an important entry point to Porsche’s sports-car range and attracted a broader customer base.

Four main generations were produced: 986, 987, 981 and 982, the last marketed as the 718 Boxster. All retained the core layout of rear-wheel drive, an engine behind the seats, a folding roof and luggage compartments at the front and rear. The Boxster also shares much of its engineering with the Cayman coupé.

Earlier versions primarily used naturally aspirated flat-six engines. The 718 Boxster introduced turbocharged flat-four engines in 2016, while six-cylinder power later returned in higher-performance models. Depending on generation and market, major variants included the standard Boxster, S, GTS, Spyder and Spyder RS.

The model is particularly known for balanced handling, precise steering, compact dimensions and useful everyday practicality for a mid-engine sports car. Its character is distinct from the rear-engined 911, with an emphasis on agility and open-top driving. Production of the combustion-engined 718 Boxster generation ended in October 2025.
