About Porsche 968
The Porsche 968 is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car introduced in 1991 for the 1992 model year. Produced until 1995, it replaced the 944 S2 and completed Porsche’s four-cylinder transaxle line. Although based on the 944, more than 80 per cent of its components were new or substantially revised. Unlike earlier four-cylinder transaxle models, the 968 was assembled at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory.
Available as a coupé or cabriolet, the 968 used a naturally aspirated 3.0-litre inline-four with VarioCam variable valve timing. Buyers could choose a six-speed manual gearbox or a Tiptronic automatic. Mounting the engine at the front and the transmission at the rear helped provide balanced weight distribution, predictable handling and useful everyday practicality.
The main performance variation was the lighter, more focused 968 Club Sport, with reduced equipment and firmer suspension. The very rare Turbo S and competition-oriented Turbo RS sat at the extreme end of the range. Positioned as a refined sports car and grand tourer rather than a direct copy of the rear-engined 911 formula, the 968 is known for its composed chassis, strong four-cylinder engine, distinctive pop-up headlights and blend of comfort, luggage space and driver engagement.
