About Porsche 959
The Porsche 959 is a limited-production two-door super sports car developed in the 1980s as a technological flagship. Although derived from the contemporary 911 and retaining a rear-mounted flat-six layout, it was conceived for FIA Group B competition and engineered as a highly specialised model.
Series production ran mainly from 1987 to 1988, with 292 cars built. A 2.85-litre sequentially twin-turbocharged boxer engine sent power to all four wheels through an electronically controlled system. Adjustable suspension, ABS, tyre-pressure monitoring, aerodynamic bodywork and lightweight materials further distinguished it from regular Porsche road cars. The 959 combined exceptional performance with advanced traction, stability and everyday usability for its era.
The principal road versions were the Komfort and Sport. Komfort cars offered more cabin equipment and height-adjustable suspension. The rarer Sport, also called the 959 S, removed selected comfort features, reduced weight and gained more power; only 29 were sold.
Within Porsche’s lineup, the 959 sat above the 911 as an exclusive technology demonstrator and halo model. Its approach to turbocharging, aerodynamics and variable all-wheel drive influenced later Porsche engineering. It remains known for its technical ambition, scarcity and place among the defining supercars of the 1980s.
