About Porsche 944
The Porsche 944 is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car produced from 1982 to 1991. Developed from the 924, it used Porsche four-cylinder engines and a rear-mounted transaxle, an arrangement that provided balanced weight distribution and predictable handling. Its wide wheel arches, pop-up headlamps and large rear hatch gave it a distinct identity while retaining useful luggage space and small rear seats.
The range began with the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre coupé and expanded through several important versions. The 944 S introduced a 16-valve engine, while the 944 Turbo added stronger performance and revised aerodynamic bodywork. The limited Turbo S increased capability further. Later, the 944 S2 combined a 3.0-litre 16-valve engine with Turbo-style design features and was offered as a coupé and Cabriolet. A rare Turbo Cabriolet appeared near the end of production.
Within Porsche’s 1980s line-up, the 944 sat above the 924 and below the larger 928, while offering a different layout and character from the rear-engined 911. It became one of Porsche’s strongest-selling models of its era. The 944 is known for composed handling, practical hatchback packaging and a blend of everyday usability with sports-car performance. It was succeeded by the closely related Porsche 968.
