About Porsche 928
The Porsche 928 is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer introduced in 1977 and produced until 1995. It combined sports-car performance with greater comfort, space and long-distance refinement than Porsche’s more focused models. Although conceived during a period when the company was considering a successor to the 911, the 928 ultimately occupied a separate position as Porsche’s flagship luxury coupé.
Every 928 used a naturally aspirated V8 engine, making it Porsche’s first V8-powered production road car. A transaxle layout placed the gearbox at the rear to improve weight distribution. Engine capacity grew from 4.5 litres in early cars to 5.4 litres in the final GTS, with specifications varying by model year and market. Principal versions included the original 928, the more powerful S, the extensively revised S4, the sport-oriented GT and the wide-bodied GTS.
The model is known for its distinctive rounded body, pop-up headlamps, large glass rear hatch and advanced Weissach rear axle. Its blend of stability, high-speed ability and comfort helped establish a different interpretation of Porsche performance. The 928 also won the 1978 European Car of the Year award, an unusual achievement for a sports car.
