About Porsche 924

The Porsche 924 is a compact 2+2 sports coupé produced from 1976 to 1988. It marked a major change for Porsche, combining a water-cooled front engine with a rear-mounted transmission. This transaxle layout provided balanced weight distribution and established the engineering format later used by the 944 and 968.

Originally developed by Porsche under contract for Volkswagen, the project was adopted by Porsche and positioned as the brand’s entry-level sports car. Production took place at Audi’s factory in Neckarsulm, Germany. More than 150,000 examples were built, making the 924 an important commercial model that introduced Porsche to a wider group of buyers.

Early cars used a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The range later expanded to include the more powerful 924 Turbo and the limited-production Carrera GT and Carrera GTS, which strengthened the model’s motorsport connection. From the 1986 model year, the 924 S gained the Porsche-built 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine used in the 944.

The 924 is known for predictable handling, relatively low weight and useful everyday practicality. Its defining design features include a low wedge-shaped profile, pop-up headlights and a large glass rear hatch, while small rear seats and accessible luggage space made it more versatile than many contemporary sports cars.
