About Porsche 918 Spyder
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a limited-production, two-seat plug-in hybrid supercar developed as a technological flagship for the brand. Previewed as a concept in 2010 and launched in late 2013, it followed earlier Porsche halo cars such as the Carrera GT while anticipating the company’s later performance-hybrid strategy. Production in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen was capped at 918 cars and ended in June 2015.
Its mid-mounted 4.6-litre naturally aspirated V8 works with two electric motors, one at each axle, to deliver all-wheel drive and a combined 652 kW (887 PS). The carbon-fibre structure, active aerodynamics, rear-axle steering and two-piece removable roof balance circuit-focused engineering with open-top road use. It can also cover short distances using electric power alone.
The principal factory variation was the optional Weissach package. It reduced weight by about 35 kg through measures including magnesium wheels, less sound insulation and further use of carbon fibre, while motorsport-inspired finishes gave it a distinct appearance. The 918 Spyder is best known for demonstrating that electrification could improve supercar performance. In 2013, it recorded a 6:57 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap, becoming the first series-production road car to break the seven-minute barrier and reinforcing its position at the top of Porsche’s road-car range.
