About Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion
The Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion was the road-legal counterpart of Porsche’s GT1 endurance racing car. Developed to meet FIA homologation requirements, it was conceived primarily as a competition machine and then adapted for public roads. Despite its name and familiar styling details, it differed fundamentally from the regular rear-engined 911, using a mid-engine layout with its power unit ahead of the rear axle.
Built by Porsche’s motorsport department in Weissach from 1996 to 1998, the Straßenversion was produced in exceptionally small numbers. Its water-cooled 3.2-litre twin-turbo flat-six delivered 544 PS, giving the car performance much closer to a racing prototype than a conventional sports coupé.
Three main forms appeared. The earliest 1996 homologation examples carried a front design associated with the 993-generation 911. Approximately 20 customer cars followed for 1997, adopting headlights and styling cues linked to the forthcoming 996 generation. A single lighter, substantially redesigned road car accompanied the 911 GT1-98 in 1998.
Within Porsche’s range, the GT1 Straßenversion stood apart from series-production models such as the 911 Turbo and GT2. It is known for its extreme rarity, competition-focused construction, carbon-fibre body components, prominent aerodynamic features and close relationship to Porsche’s Le Mans programme.
