About Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 is a rear-engined 2+2 sports car and the defining model in Porsche’s road-car range. Presented in 1963 as the 901 and launched as the 911 in 1964, it replaced the Porsche 356. Across eight generations, it has retained its basic identity: a flat-six engine behind the rear axle, a low fastback profile and greater everyday usability than many dedicated sports cars. The model is produced at Porsche’s main plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany.
The range covers several distinct roles. Carrera models form the core, with rear- or all-wheel drive depending on the version. Coupé and Cabriolet body styles are joined by the Targa, recognised by its distinctive roof design and rollover bar. Turbo models combine higher performance with touring ability, while the GT3 and GT3 RS apply motorsport-influenced engineering and a stronger track focus. GTS variants generally bridge the gap between regular Carrera models and more specialised versions.
Within the Porsche lineup, the 911 serves as the brand’s flagship series-production sports car. It is known for precise handling, strong braking, evolutionary styling and a characteristic rear-engine driving experience. Its blend of performance, comfort, compact packaging and long-distance usability distinguishes it from many rivals. Continuous development, extensive competition links and a wide choice of configurations have made the 911 one of the most recognisable sports cars in production.
