About Pontiac Trans Sport
Pontiac Trans Sport was a front-wheel-drive minivan sold from the 1990 model year through the late 1990s. It gave Pontiac an entry in the growing family-vehicle market while applying the brand’s sport-oriented image to a practical people carrier. The model shared General Motors’ U-body platform with the Chevrolet Lumina APV and Oldsmobile Silhouette.
The first generation is known for its futuristic shape, featuring a long, steeply raked windscreen, an extended nose and composite body panels. Early versions used a 3.1-litre V6, while later models gained more powerful V6 options. Removable rear seats, a sliding side door and a spacious cabin provided typical minivan versatility despite the unconventional exterior.
A fully redesigned second generation arrived for 1997 with more traditional styling, better outward visibility and short- and extended-wheelbase versions. It retained V6 power and front-wheel drive, while selected configurations offered a second sliding side door. The Montana appearance package added SUV-inspired details and later became a separate model name. Pontiac replaced the Trans Sport name with Montana in the United States after 1998, although Trans Sport continued for 1999 in Canada.
Within Pontiac’s range, the Trans Sport was the principal family van. It is remembered mainly for the first generation’s space-age design and its combination of passenger capacity, flexible seating and car-like driving characteristics.
