About Pontiac Torrent
The Pontiac Torrent is a five-seat midsize crossover SUV sold for the 2006–2009 model years. It replaced the Aztek as Pontiac’s main crossover and gave the brand a more conventional entry in a segment increasingly focused on car-like road manners and everyday versatility.
Built in Ingersoll, Ontario, the Torrent shared General Motors’ Theta architecture and much of its engineering with the first-generation Chevrolet Equinox. Pontiac distinguished it through unique front and rear styling, interior details and a more sport-oriented presentation. The model remained in a single generation throughout its short production run.
Standard versions used a 3.4-litre V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission and were available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. For 2008 and 2009, the GXP added a 3.6-litre V6, a six-speed automatic, firmer suspension tuning, a lower ride height and model-specific appearance features.
The Torrent is known for combining Pontiac styling with practical crossover packaging. Its two-row cabin included a sliding and reclining split rear seat, allowing owners to trade rear legroom for cargo space. It occupied the family-oriented side of Pontiac’s lineup rather than serving as a traditional off-road SUV. Production ended after 2009 as General Motors phased out the Pontiac brand.
