About Pontiac T1000

The Pontiac T1000 was introduced for 1981 as the brand’s entry-level subcompact in the United States. It was Pontiac’s version of General Motors’ rear-wheel-drive T-car and was closely related to the Chevrolet Chevette. The T1000 name applied to the 1981 and 1982 model years; from 1983 through 1987, the line was sold as the Pontiac 1000. It is generally regarded as one generation rather than a series of redesigns.

The model came as a three-door or five-door hatchback, combining compact exterior dimensions with a folding rear seat and useful cargo space. Most versions used a 1.6-litre overhead-cam four-cylinder petrol engine. A four-speed manual transmission was standard for much of the production run, while a three-speed automatic and, in later years, a five-speed manual were available. Its layout included rack-and-pinion steering, front disc brakes and a torque-tube driveline.

Within Pontiac’s range, the T1000 sat below larger and more powerful models. It focused on affordability, fuel economy and straightforward transport rather than performance, although selected years offered sport-appearance and handling packages. It is best known as a simple 1980s hatchback with practical packaging and extensive mechanical commonality with the Chevette.
