About Pontiac Sunfire
The Pontiac Sunfire was a front-wheel-drive compact car sold for the 1995–2005 model years. It replaced the Sunbird and served as Pontiac’s affordable entry-level car. Built on General Motors’ J platform, it shared its basic structure and mechanical components with the Chevrolet Cavalier but used distinctive Pontiac styling and trim.
The Sunfire remained within one main generation, receiving notable styling updates for 2000 and 2003. Its body range included a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and convertible, although availability varied by year and market. The coupe became the principal version near the end of production. SE models formed the core of the range, while GT versions added a sportier appearance, larger wheels and more powerful engine choices.
Four-cylinder engines were used throughout, including 2.2-litre, 2.3-litre and 2.4-litre units. Later cars adopted GM’s 2.2-litre Ecotec engine. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered. The Sunfire is chiefly known for combining compact dimensions and straightforward mechanicals with the more expressive design associated with Pontiac. It occupied the accessible end of the brand’s North American passenger-car lineup, offering practical daily transport in several body styles rather than the performance focus of Pontiac’s larger or more specialised models. Production ended in 2005.
