About Pontiac Solstice
The Pontiac Solstice is a compact two-seat sports car developed as a distinctive, affordable roadster within Pontiac’s performance-oriented line-up. It entered production in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2005 for the 2006 model year and remained available through the 2010 model year, although regular production ended in 2009 as General Motors discontinued the Pontiac brand.
Built on GM’s rear-wheel-drive Kappa platform, the Solstice used a front-engine layout and was closely related to the Saturn Sky. It was offered primarily as a soft-top roadster, while a low-volume coupe with a removable roof panel joined the range for 2009. The model had one generation and retained its original basic design throughout its short production run.
Standard versions used a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine. The higher-performance GXP, introduced for 2007, added a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, along with chassis and appearance changes. Five-speed manual and automatic transmissions were available.
The Solstice is known for its concept-car-inspired styling, broad stance, rear-wheel-drive handling and unusual forward-hinged clamshell bonnet. It gave Pontiac a direct presence in the small-roadster market and served as an image-building model rather than a high-volume car. Limited cabin storage and a small boot reduced everyday practicality, but the rare coupe and turbocharged GXP remain the most distinctive variations.
