About Pontiac Phoenix
The Pontiac Phoenix was a compact passenger car offered for the 1977–1984 model years. It entered the range as a more upscale development of the Ventura and became Pontiac’s principal compact model during a period when General Motors was reducing vehicle size and improving fuel efficiency.
Two distinct generations were produced. The 1977–1979 Phoenix used GM’s traditional rear-wheel-drive X-body platform. Depending on model year, it was available as a two-door coupe, three-door hatchback or four-door sedan. Engine choices included four-, six- and eight-cylinder units, giving buyers a choice between economy and stronger performance.
For 1980, the Phoenix was completely redesigned around a smaller front-wheel-drive X-body platform. This made it Pontiac’s first front-wheel-drive production car. The second generation continued through 1984 in two-door coupe and five-door hatchback forms, generally using four-cylinder or V6 power.
Base models served the mainstream compact market, while LJ versions placed greater emphasis on comfort and equipment. The SJ offered sportier presentation and became a separate trim level for 1982. A PJ version appeared for 1983, and the LJ and SJ names changed to LE and SE for the final 1984 model year.
The Phoenix is chiefly known for bridging two very different periods in Pontiac design: conventional rear-wheel-drive compacts of the 1970s and the smaller, front-wheel-drive cars that shaped the brand’s 1980s range.
