About Pontiac Parisienne

Pontiac Parisienne was a full-size, rear-wheel-drive car developed mainly for Canada. Introduced in 1958 as a Laurentian subseries and made a separate model for 1959, it combined Pontiac styling and trim with engineering often shared with full-size Chevrolets. For much of its Canadian career, it sat near the better-equipped end of Pontiac’s large-car range.

Earlier generations followed changing GM full-size designs and included sedans, hardtops, coupes, convertibles and station wagons. Important variations included the Custom Sport and 2+2, the more luxurious Grande Parisienne, and Brougham trim. These versions gave the nameplate a broad role, from family transport to a more formal, comfort-oriented model.

The fifth generation, built from 1977 to 1986, used GM’s downsized B-body platform. It was shorter and lighter than its predecessor but retained a spacious cabin, body-on-frame construction and rear-wheel drive. Depending on year and market, the range included two- and four-door cars, Safari wagons, and six-cylinder or V8 engines. From 1982 it became more closely related to the Chevrolet Caprice while keeping Pontiac-specific details. The Parisienne entered the US range in 1983 as a sedan and wagon, filling Pontiac’s traditional full-size position after the Bonneville moved to a smaller platform. It is known for generous passenger space, a soft ride and its unusual place as a Canadian Pontiac later sold in the United States.
