About Pontiac Montana
The Pontiac Montana was a family minivan developed within General Motors’ U-body vehicle programme. The name first appeared as an appearance package for the Pontiac Trans Sport in 1997 before becoming a standalone model for 1999 in the United States and 2000 in Canada. It served as Pontiac’s main people carrier and shared its basic architecture with other GM minivans, including the Chevrolet Venture and Oldsmobile Silhouette.
The first-generation Montana used a conventional minivan layout with sliding side doors, three-row seating and front-wheel drive. Short- and long-wheelbase versions were offered, with seating configurations for seven or eight occupants. All-wheel drive was available on selected later models. Its main qualities were flexible passenger space, removable rear seats and useful cargo capacity, combined with styling intended to give Pontiac’s version a more rugged identity.
For 2005, the redesigned model became the Montana SV6. This second generation retained minivan practicality but adopted a longer nose and SUV-inspired exterior details. Versions varied by market, wheelbase and drivetrain. US sales ended after the 2006 model year, while the SV6 continued in Canada and Mexico through 2009. As Pontiac’s final minivan, the Montana is chiefly known as the brand’s practical alternative to traditional family vans, with a more distinctive visual character than its GM relatives.
