About Pontiac Matiz
The Pontiac Matiz was a small five-door city hatchback sold mainly in Mexico during the 2000s. It was not developed as a traditional Pontiac model; it was General Motors’ Mexican-market version of the Daewoo Matiz, a design also sold under Chevrolet and other GM brands in different countries. It gave Pontiac an entry-level offering below its larger cars, SUVs and performance-focused models.
Introduced in Mexico in 2003, the car was initially known simply as the Pontiac Matiz. From the 2006 model year, it was marketed as the Matiz G2, reflecting updated styling and equipment rather than an unrelated new vehicle. Its Pontiac-badged run ended in 2010 as General Motors discontinued the brand. The same basic model then continued in Mexico as the Chevrolet Matiz.
The Matiz used a tall, narrow body intended to provide useful passenger space within a very short footprint. Mexican-market versions were commonly equipped with a 1.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a five-speed manual transmission, while features varied by package and model year. Compact dimensions, straightforward mechanical components and modest running costs made it well suited to urban driving and economical daily transport. Within Pontiac’s Mexican range, it was the smallest and most affordable model, prioritising practicality and manoeuvrability over performance.
