About Pontiac LeMans

The modern Pontiac LeMans was an entry-level compact sold in North America for the 1988–1993 model years. Unlike its rear-wheel-drive predecessors, this sixth-generation model used front-wheel drive and was built in South Korea by Daewoo. It was derived from the Opel Kadett E, reflecting General Motors’ international product strategy of the period.

The range included a three-door hatchback, marketed as the Aerocoupe, and a four-door sedan. Depending on model year, versions included the basic Value Leader, LE and SE, plus the sportier GSE Aerocoupe. Four-cylinder engines of 1.6 and 2.0 litres were offered during the production run, with manual and automatic transmissions available. The model occupied the affordable end of Pontiac’s line-up and was primarily known for compact dimensions, practical body styles and economical everyday transport.

Earlier LeMans models had a very different identity. Introduced in 1961 as an upmarket version of the compact Tempest, the name later represented Pontiac’s intermediate-size cars across five generations through 1981. Coupes, sedans, convertibles and station wagons were offered, along with Grand LeMans variants. The original Pontiac GTO also began as a performance option within the LeMans range. As a result, the nameplate covers both traditional American models and a later internationally developed compact.
