About Pontiac Laurentian
The Pontiac Laurentian was a full-size passenger car created mainly for Canada and sold from the early 1950s through the 1981 model year. For much of its life, it combined Pontiac styling with Chevrolet-derived chassis, engines and transmissions, making it a distinct Canadian product rather than a direct copy of a US-market Pontiac.
The final generation, offered from 1977 to 1981, arrived with GM’s downsized full-size platform. Compared with the large 1971–1976 version, it was shorter and lighter but retained rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame construction and spacious seating. The range included a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and Laurentian Safari station wagon. Six-cylinder and V8 engines were available, depending on year and body style.
In the later lineup, the Laurentian was the basic, value-oriented full-size Pontiac, positioned below the Catalina and Parisienne. Its straightforward trim and broad body choice suited family, fleet and general transport needs rather than luxury or performance roles.
Earlier versions followed Pontiac’s regular full-size redesign cycles. Models of the 1950s and 1960s included sedans, hardtops and wagons, while some Canadian-built cars were exported as kits for right-hand-drive assembly. The Laurentian is best known for pairing Pontiac appearance with widely used Chevrolet mechanical hardware, practical cabin space and an accessible position in Pontiac’s traditional large-car range.
