About Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO is a rear-wheel-drive performance coupe best known for helping establish the American muscle-car formula. The original line ran from the 1964 to 1974 model years across four generations, initially combining a mid-size Pontiac body with a powerful V8. Its final classic version was the 1974 Ventura-based compact, after which the name remained absent for three decades.
Pontiac revived the GTO for a fifth generation covering the 2004–2006 model years. This modern version was an Australian-built adaptation of the Holden Monaro, reworked for left-hand-drive North American markets. It was offered as a four-seat, two-door coupe with independent suspension and a choice of six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The 2004 model used a 5.7-litre LS1 V8 producing 350 horsepower, while 2005 and 2006 cars received a 6.0-litre LS2 rated at 400 horsepower.
Within Pontiac’s range, the revived GTO served as a high-performance flagship rather than a high-volume model. It combined strong V8 performance and rear-wheel drive with understated styling, a relatively spacious cabin and everyday touring ability. Unlike the more visually aggressive classic generations, the fifth-generation car used a restrained grand-touring design, making its powertrain and Australian engineering central to its identity.
