About Pontiac Grand Prix
The Pontiac Grand Prix was a long-running General Motors model sold from the 1962 through 2008 model years. It began as a full-size, rear-wheel-drive performance coupe with personal-luxury positioning, combining distinctive styling, a well-equipped cabin and available V8 power. It later moved into the intermediate and mid-size classes while remaining a prominent Pontiac road car.
Across eight generations, the Grand Prix changed substantially in size and purpose. Early models were mainly two-door hardtops and coupes, with a convertible offered briefly in 1967. For 1988, it shifted to GM’s front-wheel-drive W platform, and a four-door sedan joined the range for 1990. Coupes and sedans were offered together until the coupe ended after the 2002 model year. The 2004–2008 generation was sedan-only.
Later lineups commonly used SE, GT and GTP designations. The supercharged GTP became one of the best-known modern versions, while the GXP introduced a 5.3-litre V8 for 2005. The Grand Prix is known for combining everyday cabin space and comfort with Pontiac’s sport-oriented image, including bold wide-track styling, strong V6 options and an available head-up display. It sat above smaller Pontiac models such as the Grand Am and G6. Production ended after 2008 as the rear-wheel-drive G8 entered the range.
