About Pontiac Grand Am
The Pontiac Grand Am was a General Motors passenger car produced across five generations for the 1973–1975, 1978–1980 and 1985–2005 model years. Its role changed substantially over time, but it consistently combined Pontiac’s sporty image with the comfort and practicality of a mainstream car.
Early Grand Am models were rear-wheel-drive mid-size cars related to the Pontiac LeMans. Offered as two-door coupes and four-door sedans, they blended performance-oriented styling with a more refined character than traditional muscle cars. The name returned for a downsized second generation before being discontinued again after 1980.
Pontiac revived the Grand Am in 1985 as a front-wheel-drive model. These later generations became the best-known versions, offering compact or mid-size dimensions, coupe and sedan body styles, and four-cylinder or V6 engines depending on year and specification. Common trim levels included LE, SE, GT and GT1, with GT versions generally receiving sportier styling and equipment.
In Pontiac’s later range, the Grand Am occupied the space between the smaller Sunfire and the larger Grand Prix. It was known for distinctive bodywork, driver-focused dashboards and accessible sporty character. Production ended after the 2005 model year as the Pontiac G6 took over its position.
