About Pontiac Firefly
The Pontiac Firefly was a small, front-wheel-drive car sold mainly in Canada from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1994 to 2000. Developed through General Motors’ partnership with Suzuki, it was a Pontiac-badged relative of the Suzuki Cultus, Chevrolet Sprint and Geo Metro. Early cars were imported from Japan, while later hatchbacks and sedans were assembled by CAMI Automotive in Ontario.
Across three main design iterations, the Firefly evolved from a basic angular hatchback into a more rounded and refined subcompact. Depending on year, the range included three-door and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door sedan and, briefly, a two-door convertible. Most versions used a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, while selected models offered a turbocharged unit or a larger 1.3-litre four-cylinder. Manual and automatic transmissions were available.
Within Pontiac’s Canadian lineup, the Firefly served as an affordable entry-level model below the brand’s compact cars. It was known primarily for economical operation, compact exterior dimensions and a simple, lightweight design rather than the performance-oriented character associated with many Pontiacs. Turbo and convertible versions added variety, but practical hatchbacks and sedans formed the core of the range.
