About Pontiac Firebird
The Pontiac Firebird was a rear-wheel-drive American pony car produced for the 1967–2002 model years. Built on General Motors’ F-body platform alongside the Chevrolet Camaro, it gave Pontiac a distinctive entry in the sporty-car market, with its own styling, equipment and performance character.
Four generations were offered: 1967–1969, 1970–1981, 1982–1992 and 1993–2002. The Firebird evolved from a compact coupe and convertible into the long, low second-generation design, the angular third-generation hatchback and the more aerodynamic final model. Six-cylinder and V8 engines were available at various times, depending on year and version.
The range covered several price and performance levels. Base models provided accessible sporty transport, while the second-generation Esprit placed greater emphasis on comfort and appearance. Formula versions combined stronger performance with relatively restrained styling. The Trans Am became the best-known flagship, typically adding more aggressive bodywork, upgraded handling equipment and higher-performance engine choices.
Known for dramatic styling, strong V8 character and a prominent place in popular culture, the Firebird was central to Pontiac’s performance image. It offered a more focused alternative to the brand’s mainstream cars while retaining rear seats and enough practicality for regular road use.
